CST300 - Week 6

Team Meeting Discussions

On Saturday, we discussed our capstone project ideas. I have two main ideas that I like: a web app for a tabletop game and a simple educational video game. Cody had the idea of looking back at his previous projects, and iterating on one of them for a capstone project. This way, he says, he doesn't have to remake a database from the ground up for this project, which I think is a great idea.

We also discussed how to start the final video project, which for us at Group 8 will be about autonomous drones in war. We researched some articles about their history, beneficial usage (not war-related!), and detrimental usage.

Reflections

This week I recapped my knowledge about Java, since that is what CST 338 - Software Design will be mainly using. I also had fun making a website with Weebly! (Well, for the most part, until I figured out how limiting it is...) I learned a bit more about prompt engineering, but still don't feel comfortable using it. I am glad that this module covered more information about resumes and cover letters, since I am still not very experienced with writing them. I provided annotated versions of mine below, any advice I get for them would be greatly appreciated!

Isopod Update: They seem to be doing okay in the heat. The red pak chong and shiro utsuri populations are booming!

Cover Letter - Advice

I wrote this cover letter to MBARI in 2023, for a electronic assembler job, though it was rather lackluster. I omitted the cover letter's personal identifying information, but left the publicly available info for MBARI in.

MBARI

[HR Employee's Name]

Job Code: E-Assembler

7700 Sandholdt Road

Moss Landing, CA 95039

To [HR Employee],

MBARI is an institute that I look up to for both scientific and personal interests. I wish to work closely with the teams that bring footage of previously unknown aquatic life to light. I have sought positions in MBARI for some time now and I do believe that this opportunity as an electronic assembler fits my skill set.

I believe that this position is a perfect opportunity to begin my career at MBARI by utilizing my experience at [company name]. Through my work here, I realize that I am detail-oriented and learn new skills very quickly. I have been assigned multiple roles over the course of my time at [company] with these qualities, which include following written instructions to assemble electronic components, timed work under a microscope, and performing routine cycle counts. I find that I work best when learning new skills and finding ways to improve myself. With this in mind, I understand that working in a research team will call for multitasking capabilities - which I find myself doing every day. I am able to both focus on a single task or multitask, and shift to a different task where needed. I am able to work full shifts without assistance, and I am willing to help out any team members in need of assistance.

Thank you for your consideration. I have provided my curriculum vitae for more details of my skill set. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

[Ys' full name]
