CST300 - Week 7
Part 1: Final Research Video Project Planning
Our group has met three times this week to get work on the video project done. With this time, we are able to get the presentation ready and begin recording. All we should have left is just video editing, so I believe we made good use of our time for the project.
Our main tools were Google Slides, which is a collaborative slideshow creator that we can both work on at the same time and give suggestions. We host audio meetings on Discord for discussions and source image sharing. For the recording of the presentation, I used Microsoft Stream's service to capture my microphone and the presentation. Since it saved videos in .webm format, I had to use an online service to convert the .webm file into a more widely used .mp4 file. I then sent the videos to the group's Discord for editing into a single one for the assignment.
Part 2: Lecture Review
The computer science-related TED Talk I watched was "The hidden network that makes the internet possible" by Sajan Saini. I learned how fiber optics can transport data more efficiently over long distances. How much of it is routed in the oceans across continents. Integrated photonics is a new technology that uses silicon wires instead of glass fibers -- being more power efficient, but with less range. The ideal use case would be to use fiber optics over long distances, then have nodes of integrated photonics in populated locations like cities. This would be what 6G connectivity would use when it becomes available. I am interested in seeing where this technology goes and when it becomes mainstream.
The TED Talk I was interested in watching was the "Underwater astonishments" by David Gallo. This is an older video from 2007 that, from the time's new cameras, we are able to see recordings of new sea animal behavior. We are able to see the unique behaviors of cephalopods, like cuttlefish camouflaging their bodies to appear like seaweed, and squids splitting their bodies into two colors.
The Powerpoint video was entertaining (if a little bit dated) and gives good advice for presentations. I fortunately follow most of the advice that the video gives, like making good choices for font style and size, using minimal animations for the presentation, and making sure that the slide content is concise.
